What We Do

At Cascadia, we cultivate local species of seaweed on low-impact ocean farms

in partnership with coastal First Nations. We then harvest that seaweed and manufacture products for land-based farmers addressing two global challenges: climate change and food security.

Cascadia Seaweed is uniquely positioned to address these large global challenges using biological solutions to increase food production, mitigate climate change, improve ocean ecosystems and advance Indigenous reconciliation.

As a certified B Corp and registered Benefit Company in British Columbia, we are committed to building a profitable and scalable business that our team members, shareholders and business partners are proud to be a part of.

Partnerships

Cascadia Seaweed recognizes that we operate on the traditional territories of the coastal First Nations of BC and we appreciate the opportunity to do so.

We work collaboratively with our partners to create mutually beneficial agreements based on each community's needs, interests and capacity.

Participation by coastal First Nations is critical to the long-term success of the seaweed industry in Canada due to their stewardship of the ocean and skills to develop and work in the industry. Our goal is to empower additional First Nations ownership of the activities along the seaweed value chain.

We have a strong commitment to our partners to offer contract labour and employment opportunities to their members first, and our team aims to procure supplies and equipment from First Nations owned service providers wherever possible.

We Are Cultivators

We are the largest Canadian kelp cultivator, which means we grow local seaweeds from seed on low-impact farms in the ocean. The infrastructure includes anchors on the seafloor, floats on the surface and tensioned ropes in between. We have built a team of experts to grow, process and produce seaweed-based products for regenerative agriculture.

Ecosystem Services

Ecosystem services are the benefits that seaweed farming and restoration projects have on biodiversity and ocean health. In addition to producing seaweed-derived agricultural products, we offer consulting services to help governments, non-profit organizations and other corporations achieve their environmental goals.
