YEG joins The Climate Pledge

Edmonton International Airport became the first airport in the world to join The Climate Pledge in the spring of 2021, committing to being carbon neutral by 2040.  

The Climate Pledge is an international initiative for organizations and corporations who are committed to meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement on Climate 10 years ahead of schedule. It was founded by Amazon and environmental organization Global Optimism in 2019.  

As part of The Climate Pledge, YEG is committing to three principal areas of action:  

• Regular Reporting: measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis;  
• Carbon Elimination: implement decarbonisation strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies;  
• Credible Offsets: neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially-beneficial offsets to achieve net zero annual carbon emissions by 2040. 

One of the core values for Edmonton International Airport is to be dedicated to sustainability. To reflect this value, airport leadership recognized the need to find other leaders the airport could partner with to identify opportunities to reduce climate change emissions and introduce sustainable innovation in our sector. As an international gateway, Edmonton International Airport identified The Climate Pledge as a global network of organizations that share its values and actively sought out to join this movement.  

Passenger information 

There will be no immediate changes for passengers at YEG related to The Climate Pledge. There will be no mandatory fees or costs charged to passengers to meet this agreement.  

In the future, the airport will offer voluntary options for passengers to directly offset or help lower carbon emissions linked to their flights and activities. These are still in development.  

Using public transit to come to YEG is one action passengers can currently take and land remains set aside for an LRT connection into the City of Edmonton when that is possible in the future.
